Fastest Growing Facebook Group Now Has A Million Members

Filed under: General News — Iphoner @ 3:37 pm

ColbertUnfortunately, the fastest growing Facebook group ever is not a very spontaneous affair; it’s part of a US presidential candidate’s campaign. However, the results are quite astonishing.

Responding to Barack Obama’s Facebook group called Barack Obama (One Million Strong For Barack), which managed to acquire 381.000 members in 9 months, Stephen Colbert launched his own group - originally named 1.000.000 Strong For Stephen T. Colbert - which reached its goal of one million members in just one week. It’s not stopping there; open the group and refresh after a couple of minutes, and you’ll see that the numbers are still rising fast. At the time of this writing, the group has 1,001,168 members.

This is the strongest example of social network usage for political promotion yet. By spending very little time and money, Colbert has managed to gather one million supporters. Whether or not they’ll all vote for him is another matter, but it’s obvious that these (and all following) elections will largely be fought online.

Slowly trickling in

Filed under: General News — Iphoner @ 3:13 pm

Thursday, October 25, 2007 — 9:38 p.m. — at my desk

DrippingfaucetWell, I’m still computerless and I will be for another 7-10 days.

My hard drive is busted and possibly the fan, so I’m dependent on my iPhone and my work computer for a little while longer.

Please forgive me if I don’t post as often as you are used to. But once I’m back up I’ll make up for it and then some.

Because my computer can be fixed, I have decided to keep it for another year or so. Who knows what kinds of technology will come along by then, so the longer I can wait the better.

MacNN reported earlier that Apple filed a patent for a multi-touch keyboard. I think the next laptops could feature multi-touch. and they’ll only get faster and have more hard drive space available.

Obviously, not having an Intel-based system is only something I can do for a little while longer. The rumblings are that OS X 10.6 — whatever cat it is called (Hyena? Mountain Lion?) won’t even support the Power PC architecture. Intel or the highway.

So now it’s a waiting game until I get back up and running. I’ll post what I can in between.

Thanks for calling.

My iPhone is my computer

Filed under: General News — Iphoner @ 3:11 pm

Wednesday, October 24, 2007 — 10:03 a.m. –on 151 on way to Apple store North Michigan Avenue

When I came home from work early this morning, my computer was dead. Hard drive appears very fried. It is also making a sound I can only describe as a very upset cow.

So I’m learning just how well my iPhone functions as my computer. I backed up last month so I lost some stuff but I think I can recover. Now the question is whether I replace or fix. Cost will dictate. My computer is more than 3 years old.

That’s like 90 in human years.

Last night I could troubleshoot with my iPhone. And I can do some blogging between here and work … Still it’s a sad day unless some Apple genius can save the day.

So I will keep you informed of my computer’s prognosis and let you know how my iPhone does as starting QB.

**UPDATE - The first appointment at the Apple Store was tomorrow at 11:15. So I have my computer here at work and then I have the iPhone. I’m really thankful for it especially now. The big question in my mind is do I buy a new MacBook or do I fix the other one. I think it depends on cost. $100 fix then sure. $500? Not so much. What amazes me is that my current busted computer is the top of the line Powerbook G4 from 2004 and the new bottom of the line MacBook is like 10 times more powerful. So amazing how times change.**

Oh, and a public service announcement: backup your computer. Often. Set an alarm on your iPhone if thats what it takes to remember.

Thanks for calling.

LinkedIn Likely To Take The IPO Route

Filed under: General News — Iphoner @ 3:10 pm

LinkedIn

The Web 2.0 bubble is taking shape, although a bit more cautiously than the first time around. Now, actual value a company is able to produce is taken into account, and LinkedIn is one of those companies that (gasp!) make money from their web based social networking business.

As such, the question about LinkedIn’s future reappears every now and then, and in a recent Newsweek interview LinkedIn CEO Dan Nye did not rule out the possibility of an IPO; actually, he called it “likely”. “We are committed to building a company that changes the world, and we believe that we can do that best independently. We have a great advantage because we are profitable, and so we can fund our own growth.” - Dan said, adding that they’re looking at 300 percent growth in 2007.

Although pessimists might start drawing parallels to the dot-com bust in the late nineties, it’s important to note that LinkedIn is a company on solid ground with big growth and profits to show for it. It’s got paying customers, and it doesn’t rely solely on ads for its revenue, which separates it from 95% of other web companies out there. In a world where everyone is used to getting everything free, LinkedIn has a product so good that people will gladly pay for it. When companies that are losing money or have no sound business model except for selling ad space start announcing IPOs, then we should start to worry.
